Globular Clusters and Dwarf Galaxies as Probes of Structure Formation in the Local Universe

Giovedì 7 ottobre alle ore 12:00 Marco Mirabile (INAF-OAAb) terrà un seminario dal titolo “Globular Clusters and Dwarf Galaxies as Probes of Structure Formation in the Local Universe”.

Abstract:
Within the ΛCDM framework, galaxy groups and clusters assemble hierarchically, and their low-mass galaxies and globular cluster (GC) systems act as fossil records of this process. In this talk, I present the results of my PhD thesis, which uses GC systems, low-surface-brightness dwarf galaxies, and the galaxy luminosity function (GLF) to constrain the mass assembly history of the NGC 3640 galaxy group and the Hydra I galaxy cluster. Using deep VST/VEGAS imaging of NGC 3640 and studying the properties of the GC population in the system, we propose an interaction model to explain the diffuse intragroup GC populations, asymmetric GC distributions, and GC colour distribution properties. Additionally, we identified 17 previously uncatalogued dwarf galaxies. In Hydra I, we combined VEGAS, VISTA, and MUSE data from the LEWIS survey to present the first homogeneous spectro-photometric analysis of the GC systems of 24 ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) in a cluster. Their specific frequencies and dynamical-to-stellar mass ratios (~100–1000) indicate dwarf-like dark-matter systems that favour a puffed-up dwarf origin over a failed-galaxy scenario. The first near-infrared GLF of Hydra I yields a faint-end slope of α = −1.34 ± 0.09 and reveals an underdensity at the giant–dwarf transition, in agreement with recent Euclid results. Finally, I present a science case for SHARP, a near-infrared multi-mode spectrograph concept that will be proposed for the ELT, which will allow spectroscopy of GC systems in UDGs at distances about three times larger than currently possible.
