Optical follow-up of Tidal Disruption Events

Giovedì 8 ottobre alle ore 15:00, la Dr. Francesca Onori dell’INAF-Osservatorio Astronomico d’Abruzzo, terrà il web-seminar dal titolo “Optical follow-up of Tidal Disruption Events“.

Abstract

The tidal forces from SMBHs can disrupt stars in their vicinity. These tidal disruption events (TDEs) can be accompanied by a luminous X-ray, UV and/or optical flare and they represent an important tool to study quiescent SMBHs and their environment in the era of time domain astrophysics. Three different origins for the optical/UV emission have recently been proposed: outflows; emission by shocks from intersecting debris streams; or thermal reprocessing of accretion power by a layer of gas. These models imply a different geometry of the emitting region (i.e. an AGN-like broad line region or an inflow-outflow stream debris) and thus they predict different properties and evolution of the observed emission lines. Dense photometric and spectroscopic monitoring campaigns of the TDE emission provide a useful tool to investigate the underlying TDE emission mechanisms.
I will present the new results from optical follow-up campaigns performed with high quality photometric and spectroscopic observations, which have allowed to deeply investigate the TDE spectroscopic features and their evolution with time. The implication on the underlying UV/Optical emission mechanism and on the properties of the emitting region will be discussed.
