The PHAROS2 Phased Array Feed (PAF) and future perspectives of PAF developments at INAF

Abstract

A Phased Array Feed (PAF) is an array of densely packed receiving antennas placed at the focal plane of a radio telescope enabling to electronically synthesize dozens of simultaneous beams in the sky. The antenna elements act as sensors of the electromagnetic field across the focal plane. The outputs of the receivers are coherently combined in beamformers with appropriate weights to synthesize several discrete beams. A PAF is a multi-beam radio camera that enables observing a large angular area in the sky with high sensitivity, thus achieving a high survey speed of extended radio astronomy sources. PAFs find application in new generation single-dish radio telescopes and radio interferometers.
After an introduction to the PAF technology, I will describe the development of PHAROS2, a cryogenic PAF with a digital beamformer for radioastronomy application designed to operate across 4-8 GHz (C-band). The instrument is a technology demonstrator developed by INAF in collaboration with international partners in the framework of the PAF Advanced Instrumentation Programme for the Square Kilometer Array (SKA).
I will discuss the results of the PHAROS2 tests on a 25-m diameter antenna and describe the prospects of PAF developments at INAF.
