The impact of asteroseismology in modern astrophysics

Giovedì 04 giugno alle ore 15:00 Maria Pia Di Mauro (INAF – Istituto di Astrofisica e Planetologia Spaziali, Rome, Italy) terrà un seminario dal titolo “The impact of asteroseismology in modern astrophysics“.

Abstract:
Asteroseismology has evolved from a largely descriptive discipline into one of the most powerful diagnostic tools in modern astrophysics, providing unique constraints on the internal structure and evolutionary states of stars. Exploiting the high-precision photometry delivered by Kepler, TESS, and the upcoming PLATO mission, stellar oscillation spectra can now be resolved with unprecedented detail, allowing us to probe the physical processes governing stellar interiors. In this seminar, I will present how asteroseismology has become a unifying tool across multiple astrophysical  scales.  By providing direct access to the stellar engine, seismic diagnostics are redefining our understanding of fundamental stellar physics, addressing long-standing questions such as angular momentum transport, internal mixing, and dynamo processes. I will highlight how this investigation extends beyond individual stars, demonstrating that when seismic diagnostics are applied in the case of binary systems and stellar clusters these objects serve as critical laboratories for calibrating evolutionary tracks and to provide a new lens through which to reconstruct the chemo-dynamical evolution of the Milky Way. Furthermore I will show how seismic insights propagate to the high-precision characterization of exoplanetary systems, bridging the gap between stellar interiors and the interaction with orbiting worlds. Finally, I will explore the future perspectives of the field, focusing on the challenges and opportunities presented by “strong” environments. This includes the push toward the seismic study of low mass pre-main sequence stars and M dwarfs, where high magnetic activity or/and surface rotation provide new physical and observational challenges.
